从事以木本植物为主的活植物收集、保存、繁育和野生珍稀濒危保护植物的迁地保护，并对它们进行科学记录与管理，用于科学研究、物种保育、展示与科学普及教育的机构。是植物园的形式之一。
孑遗植物/ residual plant /residual plant
野生植物
过去曾有广阔的分布区，由于地质和气候原因，其近缘类群多已灭绝，现在分布范围已大大缩小，只剩个别孤立的或者是星散分布在几个狭窄分布区的植物。又称活化石植物。其分布区称为孑遗分布区。
稀有植物/ rare plant /rare plant
野生植物
有广义和狭义之分。广义稀有植物指那些在经济、科学、文化和教育等方面具有重要意义而现存数量稀少的植物，又称珍贵稀有植物，如金花茶（Camellia petelotii）。狭义稀有植物指分布范围狭窄，数量极少，如普陀鹅耳枥（Carpinus putoensis，仅存一株），但在特定生存条件下种群的生存和繁衍相对稳定；或者虽有较大的分布范围，但只是零星分布的植物，如中国蕨（Aleuritopteris grevilleoides），金钱松（Pseudolarix amabilis）。通常使用其广义概念。

野生植物
分布区仅限于某一地区，或仅生长在某种局部特有生境的植物物种。又称特有种。
物种濒危系数/ endangerment coefficient /endangerment coefficient
野生植物分级保护
用来表示某种珍稀濒危物种在自然分布状态下受威胁的程度。
