研究云粒子（云滴、冰晶）和降水粒子（雨滴、雪、霰粒、雹等）的形成、转化和增长的物理规律的学科。是云和降水物理学的重要组成部分，又是人工影响天气的理论基础。

湿空气上升膨胀冷却，水汽达到过饱和，在云凝结核上凝结而生成水滴的过程。此过程是在已有的相态中生成新相态的过程，即在已有的气相（水汽）中生成液相（水滴）或固相（冰晶）的过程。

云中气块上升降温达到水汽过饱和时，可以生成云滴。之后如果气块能够继续维持过饱和，则云滴在过饱和的环境中继续通过凝结增长，即空气中的水汽分子进入液滴中，使液滴增大。从分子物理学角度说，就是从空气进入液滴的水分子数比从液滴离开的水分子数要多，是一种相变过程。
