一级相变是相变发生时，系统热力学势吉布斯（Gibbs）自由能或亥姆霍兹（Helmholtz）自由能的一级偏微商不连续的相变。而相变发生时，系统热力学势的一级偏微商连续面二级或更高级偏微商不连续的相变，则为二级相变或更高级相变。
